Truthy Tuesday: How Blogging is Creating Freedom For Me, Emotionally and Financially

Truthy Tuesday with Caylie Price

{By guest maven, Caylie Price}

Eighteen months ago my blog and business were effectively a hobby.

Twelve months ago I needed a new direction in life. Everything I’d known had been turned upside down, never to be the same again.

Through the unexpected breakup of my relationship I was left homeless, financially insecure and heartbroken. I’d seriously considered giving up my blog and business in an attempt to save the relationship but of course they weren’t the only factor.

I wanted to move away for a fresh start but through choices I had made financially, it wasn’t possible.

I vowed never to be in the same position again. I vowed to create my freedom, but at the time, through the emotion, wasn’t able to comprehend how I’d achieve it.

The only things I thought I was sure about were my dream to have a successful business and blog that supported my lifestyle. And really who could have been sure of that when I was barely aware of what was happening around me?

But sometimes the universe, God, Allah or whoever you look to in times of need has a plan yet to be revealed. Perhaps it was fate stepping in the way.

You see before my world exploded I had been planning and promoting two blog challenges to run parallel with the London Olympics: the Blogging Olympics and Small Business Olympics.

Many lovely people had already opted in to participate and regardless of what was happening for me personally I didn’t want to let them down. Did the blog challenges go off perfectly? Gosh no. I made plenty of mistakes but on the whole things went well. The participants enjoyed it and gave some really fantastic positive and constructive feedback.

Fast forward a few months, life had settled a little but I was still struggling with the “should I” or “shouldn’t I” questions on every minor decision.

I was entirely lost in a small town where people would either not be 100% sure what blogging was or think it was a complete and utter waste of time. My beautiful girlfriends in town weren’t interested in owning a business so I didn’t want to bore them, despite my passion for it.

Brainstorming ideas for new products and services allowed me to briefly forget the turmoil of the previous months. It was while brainstorming I realised that I could build an ebook around how to host a blog challenge. Funny how life can seem to come full circle.

For weeks I wrote bits and pieces but nothing of great value. One day I was talking with a friend, Marissa Roberts of Beautifully Organised, about my predicament. Turned out she had been thinking about writing a similar product after a number of people had asked about it.

Writing the ebook together was the first step towards my freedom. We created something that was no longer about exchanging time for money. The success of “How To Host A Swingin’ Blog Challenge” buoyed my confidence and belief that financial and emotional freedom were possible.

From there, I’ve since released four highly targeted opt in incentives to grow my subscriber list – something I believe is essential to increasing freedom. Facebook has also been an extremely helpful tool for asking questions around the content my audience would like. You can’t beat providing the content your community is asking for.

For stage two of increasing my freedom I’m currently working on two more ideas – another ebook and a membership website. Research tells me there is a wonderful community of people wanting these offerings. I love that my creations, based on what I’ve learned over the journey, can assist other people on their way to financial and emotional freedom as well.

So what is next? Are my business and blog fully supporting my goals and lifestyle? Not yet but they’re definitely on the way and so much closer than eight months ago. In fact I’m planning a trip to North America next year taking in the World Domination Summit and New Media Expo. My other aim is to buy my first property as an investment towards my future.

I nearly gave up my true passions in life hoping that it would please someone else even though a part of me was dying inside. Don’t make the same mistake. Following your passions and claiming your freedom are definitely the more delicious options.

Oh Caylie, I love your story! There are so many good, “money” pieces in here for people to learn from, and I totally my favorite is being catapulted into your best life by unfortunately losing your relationship. So glad I stopped by to read this!

    Hi Mindy,
Thank you so much for popping by. You can take credit of the money “stuff” because I’ve saved money well previously (for a trip to Europe) but now you’re helping with the mindset side of money.
    Cheers,
    Caylie

Love this post Caylie. What impresses me most is the way you were able to turn a low point into such a success and use your experience to help others at the same time!

Thanks for sharing! Whenever we have a fight, my husband bashes my blog and how much time we spend on it… but it’s been my passion for a long time and right now I’m getting some fantastic opportunities (and some money) thanks to my blog. So I’m still working on it – and on helping him to see the value of it. :) Kudos to your for staying with your passion and making it work – and for helping others while doing it! :)
